Inaugural Address by the 12th Chairman of the Korean Breast Cancer Society
Dear esteemed members of the Korean Breast Cancer Society,
It is both a profound privilege and a great responsibility to assume the role of the 12th Chairman of the Korean Breast Cancer Society (KBCS). With deep respect for the achievements of our seniors and the dedication of all the members, I express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has shaped the KBCS into what it is today.
Since its founding in 1996 as a research group, the purpose of KBCS has been to contribute to the improvement of public health and to facilitate the exchange of research findings and knowledge related to breast cancer and breast diseases. It also aims to promote the advancement of breast science through fostering fellowship among members and encouraging collaboration with relevant domestic and international academic societies. Guided by three core values, “Harmony, Research, and Globalization”, we endeavor to meet our purpose.
Our vision, "With you, the World Leading KBCS," reflects our formidable commitment to overcoming challenges and leading innovation on the global stage. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, we have achieved world-class outcomes and maintained close ties with academic societies worldwide.
The Global Breast Cancer Conference (GBCC, https://gbcc.kr/), launched in 2007, represents our international reach. In 2025, it hosted over 5,000 participants from 64 countries, serving as a premier platform for sharing cutting-edge knowledge and fostering collaboration across borders, especially targeting the Asian region.
Through the successful publication of two highly regarded journals, we have contributed to advance the breast cancer research. The Journal of Breast Cancer (abbreviated as “J Breast Cancer”, https://ejbc.kr), an SCI(E)-indexed peer-review English publication with an impact factor of 2.2, issued six times annually, and the Journal of Breast Disease (abbreviated as “J Breast Dis”, https://www.jbd.or.kr/), a Korean or English bilingual academic journal published twice yearly. Together, they disseminate vital research findings and new insights to the global community.
Moving forward, we will strengthen the activities of committees in KBCS, expand clinical trials and translational research, and pursue deeper multidisciplinary collaboration both domestically and globally. Our efforts will be strategically aligned to deliver meaningful benefits to patients and propel our Society to greater global devotion and prominence.
Meanwhile, our mission to enhance public health in South Korea remains a priority. We continue to see advanced-stage patients despite advances in early detection. We also concern about overtreatment of low-risk breast lesions. Misinformation about breast cancer among general population still poses a serious challenge.
Thus, we need to put our efforts to produce evidence-based guidelines, educate the public accurately, and advocate for fair healthcare policies through active engagement with policymakers, healthcare providers, or media. Above all, unity and communication among us will be crucial to our progress. Enduring passion and engagement are the cornerstone of our collective success.
Our journey will not always be easy. Yet, when we work together, there is no challenge we cannot overcome. Let’s go together, with shared passion and purpose, to lead the KBCS toward a new era of excellence.
Thank you.
Chairman of Board of Members, KBCS
